I had the strangest dream last night - England won a match on Australian territory. The bowling was disciplined, the fielding was of a high quality, and we didn't even fall apart after losing 5 wickets early on in our run-chase.
Should I be worried about these bizarre nocturnal visions? Is medical assistance required?
On a completely different issue, if anyone's wondering what Herschelle Gibbs actually said, the answer is: "F***ing bunch of f***ing animals. F***ing go back to the zoo - it's not Pakistan, this." Charming

I propose a system of club fines for filthy errors like this.
Well he is a Yorkshireman. You know the place where the past tense of catch is catched, lost - losted, sleep - slepted. What can we say in his defence? Nowt.
I think that's got to be at least a drink for anyone who reminds him of it anywhere near a bar.

Aye. Careful though, he's into Union now. For hangover reduction reasons.
He's chosen the wrong "beer" then, because I have always found that Union gives you the worst hangovers of the lot. Laško isn't great, but the hangovers aren't as horrible in my humble opinion.

In my defence I usually read though after posting but was multi-tasking with all the important work I have to do.
Plus I'm off the booze. That can't have helped.
I always preferred Lasko for taste but as a "session" ale it's appalling. You ought to be able to have 4 x 0.5l in an night without running the risk of a hangover.

at least they didn't knock the 155 of in 15 overs.... Anderson also seems to be responding to El Presidente's criticisms - he's taken wickets and apparently bowled quite well in the last two games.

Yes he has indeed responded well, though I'll still stick by my criticism of him. He has been playing in the England setup for close to 5 years and basically, there's been 80% pie chucking and 20% quality fast-medium. I think in most teams, that would constitute experiment over, go back to county cricket and try and get better.

But he has got better - finally. I'm not a great fan but by all accounts he's bowled really well.

Just checked the result of today's game (Tues 23rd vs New Zealand) and read this.
England have managed to give up a very promising position and this performance was, in the end, woeful. There will be lots of head shaking and question-asking in the English camp now
If I were an Australian I might allow myself a small chuckle.

I think Muppet should change the title of this thread to "Latest Results"
i) to make it a regular "feature/thread"
ii) Let's be honest, make it more accurate.
Apparently NZ picked up an extra point for us being so ****e, which further reduces our chances of getting to lose to Australia in the two finals that are likely to take place.

Agreed. Not sure how to do it, though. Can you assist, gospod Mestni konec?

Actually I'm not sure the Aussies will be chuckling that much really. I do think that the supporters would prefer the teams to be closer than they are. Of course they want to win, but there's no fun in just thrashing everyone every time. Would we want to be playing a long one-sided series against Bangladesh?
We administrators have powers mere mortals can only dream of......
"Nothing in ze world can stop me know....a haa ha ha"
bit harsh the new title int'it?
I think we should make it through to the "Super8s" (which should perhaps be called Super 6s and 7s) in the World Cup and looking at the draw the best news is that we're not going to be humiliated by Scotland unless they overcome one of Australia or South Africa.
But the semis look a rather distant prospect sadly.

The FA has stepped in to resolve a dispute between Nike and England's kit manufacturer, Umbro, over the use of players including Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Robinson in promotional material for the national team's new home kit. The row broke out when Nike complained about the way Umbro was planning to use the three players, all contracted to the American sportswear giant, in promotional material for the strip.
Umbro's contract with the FA stipulates that England players must appear in groups of four or more in promotional work to prevent exploitation of players personally contracted to other brands. At a recent photoshoot, however, the players were photographed in such a way that they could be easily "cropped" from their colleagues, and Nike feared Umbro was considering using pictures of individual players including Rooney for point-of-sale promotion. Nike was also unhappy at the way its players had been positioned, with the logos on their boots not visible.
Both sides have since made concessions and the promotion campaign will go ahead, starting with the official launch on February 6, the day before England's friendly against Spain. Unfortunately for Umbro the captain, John Terry, who wears its boots, is unlikely to be fit.
Kind of sums up part of English sport at the moment. It's just the bloody romance of it all isn't it? The cricket's better but you still get execs on blathering about the "product".

Kind of appropriate that Australia should score 1/111 to win on Australia Day. That's one daddy of a "Nelson"
. Why's the Nelson appropriate?
The dreaded (by English cricketers) number of 111 known as Nelson. Cricketers being superstitious creatures fear certain numbers on the scoreboard. for England 111, 222 (double Nelson) etc. For Aussies it is 87, 187 etc (13 short of 100, 200...) and I had heard once that Sth Africa had a thing about 94.
Me, when batting, am pretty superstitious about having 0 against my name.
Looks like today's match was a bit of a crowd pleaser, with Australia winning by 8 runs. 3 centuries scored, 15 sixes and about 370 odd runs in the whole match.
Jacob Oram's 101 not out off 72 balls sounded like fun (4 fours and 6 sixes).
though my head tells me it's a wasted trip (and that i'm getting over a cold still) i'm off down to Lepa Žoga sports bar with my laptop to watch NZ v Eng. We're 92-1 chasing 308 with about 18 overs gone.
You never know. (Though you've usually got a pretty good idea.)

"Watching" the match through the medium of www.cricinfo.com and the refresh button. it seems that England were better with the bat today in their match against New Zealand. Highest scores by Ed Joyce 66 and Paul Nixon (caught off the last ball for 49) would be encouraging, but reading about more "tame" dismissals (Collingwood again) must be frustrating for England fans. Haemorrhaging runs (Monty aside) and lazy fielding must also be of concern.
Anyone see any of the match that can correct me if I'm wrong?

We were poor. I left home just as the third wicket fell, by the time I got to the pub (300m) the 4th had gone, Joyce run out, and that was that. No more boundaries until the game was over. Okay Nixon had a final fling, but if the game's already lost then it's clearly worth next to nothing. Collingwood's dismissal was atrociously soft, and everyone kept attempting elaborate reverse sweeps ... always for 1 run max.
We really seem to have gone back to 70s one day cricket.
It's just awful to watch, because you don't so much get the impression that they don't care, as much as they just can't do it. They just can't bat.

Have just woken up and it seems England are having a better day witht the bat. Ed Joyce has just scored his first century, well done to him. However I notice they have included Ravi Bopara in the side and yet he is batting after Jamie Dalrymple - what the hell are these selectors doing?
Excellent win for Australia today vs New Zealand (who must be wondering what they have to do to beat them). I liked this comment on the cricinfo ball by ball description. "Australia isn't just a mere cricket team, it is an ever-evolving, totipotent genetically-engineered cyborg, slowly devouring all who dare to stand up to it, in an orgy of willow-encrusted destruction."
Hodge certainly would have got his 100 if New Zealand hadn't gifted Australia so many no-balls.
Yeah baby, we've got them by the scruff of the neck now.
Wouldn't it be hilarious though if Eng did make it to the finals and then somehow scraped a couple more wins together. Would be the most absurd result since... ooh, Greece winning Euro 2004?

Hilarious yes and surely only possible with a strange combination of weather, Duckworth and Lewis all coming into alignment.
Sadly, given the fact it's a three-team tournament, it's even less likely than Greece's 2004 victory.
England winning 3 out 4 one-dayers. When did that last happen, incidentally. (Perhaps someone with an inter-net can trap that fact).

Saw the last few overs on Sky as England finished NZ off.
It was good to see us close a game up and take some wickets near the death, though Fleming was clearly exhausted (apparently took a serious knock to the hand as well).
Still it's better than the complete beating we were taking and two wins in a row is quite a streak compared to the past few months.
Hopefully Australia will have something left in their tanks to provide a bit of competition for the CB-Finals. It'd be a shame if they performed as they did in their last game against us.

For those of you joking about England winning let me remind you of a triangular series mismatch of yesteryear. Sri Lanka and the West Indies were locked in the "wooden spoon " battle of 95 / 96 and Sri Lanka managed to put a couple of wins together before being hopelessly outplayed by Australia in the finals. However, the form and tactics that had briefly worked for Sri Lanka, worked big time for them in the 96 World Cup played shortly after the triangular series which they won easily, so stranger things have happened...
England have won 2 in a row now. Clearly the worm is turning...
England winning 3 out 4 one-dayers. When did that last happen, incidentally?
Not sure of the relevance of 3 out of 4, but the last time England won three ODI's in a row was also the last time they won an ODI series - against Zimbabwe in Zim in winter 2004. The last "proper" series we won was the triangular one with SA & Zim in summer 2003. So it has been a while. I can't see us triumphing twice more over the Aussies, but if we win at least once and push it to a third final that won't be a bad result. given where we were this time last month.
Is anyone else setting the alarm clock for 4 am tomorrow morning? We've got to watch, if only to see Mal Loye spank Brett Lee into the stands again. I just love that shot.
I'm feeling confident. We're on a roll, the Ashes were a disaster but Grandpa Potts might just be right.
