MANCHESTER CITY FC
and of course....the mighty LJUBLJANA DRAGONS LACROSSE CLUB !!!

Huddersfield Town FC
Huddersfield Giants RLFC
NK Ljubljana (defunct)
Ljubljana Dragons Lacrosse Team

er there's a common thread here, relating to underachievement. Still going to Fartown (i.e. Huddersfield rugby league)'s first challenge cup final since 1962 just a week after my wedding was a highlight of the sporting year.

Along with ... er ... following the Slovenia cricket team by live webfeed. Desperately trying to recall a victory now...
I saw Factor v Domzale that was 2-2 cimerotic playing like a balkan Georgie Best, ...

still struggling to remember a victory of note over the past year. Well winning the test in India against the odds was pretty good as was beating Pakistan in the summer...

Of course I also broke the 63 minute barrier for the Ljubljana 10km race which i was pretty pleased with

Football-
Arsenal
Betis
Ossett Town

I'd like to support Kings Lynn at speedway to annoy Joel but I can't get past the whiff of caramelised hot dog onions and home-cracked agricultural fuel.

Other than that, underdogs and Anyone v Australia; there's some overlap.

This thread is pretty much compulsory, I suppose, so here goes:

Footie:
The Arse
The Shrews
England
Slovenia
Metz
Bangor City

(I also look out for the Palace, Huddersfield, Newcastle and Argyle results)

Cricket:
England
Slovenia
Namibia
Shropshire

Other sports:
England, at any sport except rugby, and then it's Wales. Supporting the English rugby team is Bad and Embarrassing.
Golf - UK/Ireland/bits of Europe against Murrka

Yeah Wales RU - i've only supported england rugby union for the last couple of minutes of a world cup final when then were beating australia.

I support Yorkshire CC of course and Rastrick CC (Huddersfield Cricket League).
Plus Brighouse CC (more prestigious Bradford League).

As for the "ALSO LOOK OUT FOR":

it's a long list:

AS Roma (i lived there and I'm not a fascist so Lazio was out)
Shrews
Palace
Argyle
Newcastle U
Emley (or did till they moved to Wakefield) (Unibond Div 1 - saw em play west ham and they play in the windiest village in yorkshire)

Factor (now Interblock Ljubljana) or NK Ljubljana or anyone playing at home at ŽAK Šiška
Bromley (me sister lived there)
Chelmsford City (going up - unless Bromley stop 'em)
Forest Green (me sister lived there)
Derry City
ND Ilirija
Hajduk Split
Bradford PA

and the CHECK and HOPE they've LOST list:
Halifax T
Bradford City
Leeds Scum
Wakefield RL
Oxford Utd (just cos Dave Archer's mate supports em)
Cambridge Utd (just think it'll be great when they drop below Cambridge City)

Damn straight. Wales or France for me, but I'm just as likely to be shopping or picking my arse in the bathroom when the rugby's on.

In the 'results I look out for' section, I should mention Forfar. Just to see if they've scored four.

Am I to take it that the mighty Palace have had more mentions than any other club on this thread?

so far perhaps! But I predict Interblock will start to pick up a favourite second team following when everyone realises they've got Simeunovic, GALIC, Vugdalic, AMIR bloody Ipswich and Palace-another mention there-reject KARIC, and maybe even Siljak for the second half of the season.

To all these people who "look out for" the results of their mates teams (ie Crystal Palace, Plymouth Argyle, Huddersfield and Newcaste United .)

I thought you were supposed to hate your mates teams. Maybe I don't really get this thing, but for me nothing could please me more than seeing the likes of Newcastle United get beaten, whether one of our boys supports them, or not. In fact I would even like to see them go down to the Championship. The fact that Dave the batsman supports Leeds United spurs my pleasure at their poor showing even more. Am I missing something here?

It's a complex web Mr President.

Of course, nearly everyone wants Leeds U to lose, but then there's teams for which you have an affinity - it may depend on the mate. If the other team is another division then they're not a threat to your team anyway.

Plus it gives us something to talk about after saying how are you, and what are you drinking.

plus there's the general camaraderie of the football-nation - or is that Cadamateri..

I kind of see your point, but this is Newcastle United I'm mainly referring to, Newcastle United!!!.
If your mates supported Man U there would be no sympathy or "keeping an eye out" I'm sure. Lower divisions I do understand

Newcastle United!!!

Sunderland, Portsmouth, Wolves, Sheffield Wednesday, Man City, hell even Burnley have won the league since Newcastle last did.

No everyone can relate to Newcastle - they're kind of a nice little local community club with lots of fans who never really win anything - kind of like Bishop Auckland or Gravesend and Northfleet or Erith, just that they're on telly a bit more.

You couldn't wish them any harm, really.

the Arse, Essex CCC, Chelmsford City (second mention on this thread. Bromley - no chance; Margate - dangerous), Slovenia and now the mighty Interblock. I look out for West Ham and Leeds coz of me mates in Chelmsford. Who else? Anyone that's playing Australia, Ipswich, Sheff Wed, Chelsea, ManUre, Spuds, Rangers, Lazio, Middx CCC, USA, Lazio, Bayern Munich, and a few others that will probably spring to mind a bit later.

Cricket:

England; Gloucestershire CCC (most successful one-day side in England of the last 10 years)

Football:

Bristol City (who WILL go up this season); Man United (sorry but it's terminal), Triglav Gorenjska

Despise:

Chelsea (obviously), Bristol Rovers, Man Sh1tty, Liverpool, Somerset CCC

Incidentally, I know I've been out of Slov for a while, but what's the deal with the name "Gorica Nova Gorica"? Isn't there something redundant in there? Sounds like Jerome K Jerome. Or Sunday Bloody Sunday.

Er but you're the only one to mention them. But sometimes they do come up with odd stuff like that, I think cos a couple of years ago they started putting the team name and then where they were from because Publikum for example don't have Celje in their official name. But obviously it doesn't occur to them there's no need in the case of the Big NG.

I do remember seeing a "NK LJUBLJANA Ljubljana" poster somewhere .

Not as good as the LJ hockey team being sponsored by a Stajerska based insurance company leading to the ponderous title: HK Zavarovalnica Maribor Olimpija Ljubljana.

That's a list, not a name.

BTW Muppet don't you support Southhampton as well

No idea about the football team's name, but this has got to be the best place on this forum to seque effortlessly into this one.

Or Brian Bryan? (whose incomplete story can be found on the PAST GREATS section of our own www.ljcricket.com website)

For the complete version, I guess you probably had to be there.

PS not liking Man City won't be popular with one of forum members Mr Muppet. Still, he deserves it for changing allegiances from another team - an unforgivable crime in my book.

Why on earth would I support Southampton?

I did live in Pompey for a couple of years, though never became a supporter. To declare yourself a Southampton supporter down there is like wearing an I Heart Cromwell T-shirt on the Garvaghy Road.

Oh yes, hadn't spotted that. Still not sure what Fish means by "mixture of emotions". Surely if you mix misery, misery and misery, you just get... misery?

Ouch, Lazio must have annoyed you in the past. You hate them twice.
I would just like to profess my profound dislike of Middlesborough and Nottingham Forest as well as the compulsory ManUre. In other codes I particularly dislike Collingwood FC (Aussie Rules - not the cricket player - I am a fan of his - even if he did get an MBE for scoring 10 and 7!) and find it highly amusing when Queensland get beaten in the cricket. Internationally, I hate Austria in football because they have always been so mindnumbingly dull and love beating South Africa in any sport at all.

The dullest of dull international teams are Norway without a doubt. I hate them. I'd want them to lose even against a combined Chelski/ManUre side.

On the theme of great Slovenian teams, what about "Family Shop Koper" who played in the first division a while back.

And what was Fish's former team. What's in that closet?

monsieur Luxury.

Was it in the 1998 world cup where Austria and Norway were in the same group?
I seem to recall the miost boring 0-0 draw that has ever taken place. I may be wrong, it's so boring it's faded from my memory. But yes. Norway - Bore Way more like.

Fish used to be a Chelski fan - until they bought half of their stars. Switched to City. Morally correct it could be, but I don't approve of changing teams, myself.

Yeah my fave Slovenian football team name is Slaščičarna Šmon Bled - the sheer localness of the sponsor plus the fact the sponsor's name is so much longer than the club bit.

of course Interblock Ljubljana is pretty good as far as daft names go

having said that the 1996 slovene cup 2nd rd had a team called Centiba Wreng who managed to lose 17-1!!

As for boring international teams Norway do tend to take the biscuit though I remember a 1-0 defeat for Slovenia away to Bosnia with one camera in so-called sniper position (i.e. seemingly on a hill a mile away from the stadium) - utterly utterly boring. Of course the Slovenia - South Africa match in 2002 was a borefest too.

1/8 Finals
Aluminij Kidricevo 0-5 Primorje Ajdovscina
Bakovci 0-2 Olimpija Ljubljana
Transport 1-3 Mura Mursko Sobota
Zeljeznicar Ljubljana 4-2 Crnuce [aet]
Centiba Wreng 1-17 Publikum Celje
Zivila Naklo 0-0 Sentjur [aet, 3-2 pen]
Rudar Velenje 0-0 Branik Maribor [aet, 4-2 pen]
Koper 0-1 HIT Nova Gorica

I hope it wasn't an own goal or a tame penalty that the losing team scored but instead some ludicruosly spectaculor strike that is still spoken about reverently to this very day.

I am convinced we'll never know. But you like to imagine they were 1-0 up at half-time and just let it go towards the end.

It's not a problem.....I was born in Chelsea, but having grown up either ManU or Man City fans, I didn;t want to follow the norm, so I went to watch Chelsea home and away. When that stupid tw.at Ranieri fielded the first team of non-English footballers I completely lost it, as I m an "English football" supporter...aren;t I Lux? Aren;t I Al ?????
All my family a City, and went to Maine Road on countless occassions...COME ON CITEH !!

The best Slovene team has to be the Domzale Ladies Football Club!!!

Just noticed this interesting (ie rubbish) statement from mr Fish about the number of English players in Premiership football teams.

Let's check Man City's last match vs Reading, shall we?

Man City: Weaver (Isaksson (SWEDEN)35), Richards, Dunne (IRELAND), Distin (FRANCE), Trabelsi (TUNISIA), Beasley (USA), Dabo (FRANCE) (Hamann (GERMANY) 48), Barton, Ireland (IRELAND - honestly!), Samaras (GREECE) (Sturridge 74), Vassell.
Subs Not Used: Jihai (CHINA), Corradi (ITALY).

Messrs Weaver, Richards, Barton, Sturridge and Vassell are all English. One could probably choose any premiership team for a similar result, but I thought it best to choose MAN CITY as they are clearly more English than other teams.

Chelsea...6 players !
I won't bother with the Arse.
Man U ....11

I suppose that's proving a point ...What's that about rubbish ? apart from the Man City attack, of course ?

One could argue that as there are more English players at a club like West Ham and a great tradition of bringing up youngsters and have an English manager that they are better than the likes of your Man City's. But (oh I forgot) a foreigner owns them. Who would be the most English team in the premiership?
