Songs about/that make reference to cricket

Getting the risible 'Dreadlock Holiday' by 10cc out of the way (played incidentally at the Roots In Session party at Metelkova last week on the understanding that it is reggae)...

'Inca Rag/Name Game' by Fiery Furnaces -- "Let’s play bacci and horseshoes and croquet/But no not cricket ‘cause I can’t say their names". Great song.

'MCC vs West Indies' by Lord Beginner, a calypso report of the 1934/5 tour of the West Indies, 'Body Line' by King Radio ("Oh cause, she terrible in bowling body line/She could bowl me body line"), and 'Intercolonial Tournament' by The Attila. I've got these last three on a great calypso compilation if anyone's interested.

Over to you.

Speaking of risable - how about Aussie 70s MOR stalwarts Sherbet with "Howzat"?

I think member Joel would enjoy "****ing hell. It's Fred Titmus." by Half Man Half Biscuit- the most famous band ever known to support Tranmere Rovers!

Fred Titmus of course a former England cricketer.

BTW - do the Fiery Furnaces include our own Tom "sometimes known as Fiery" Furness?

Cheers El P, I'll get downloading. Another great title from HMHB

(Doesn't beat recent favourite 'We Built This Village On A Trad. Arr. Tune' though).

Does Rolf Harris "Jake the Peg" count?

I had a dreadful childhood really, I s'pose I shouldn't moan
Each time they had a three legged race, I won it on me own
And also I got popular, when came the time for cricket
They used to roll my trousers up
And use me for the wicket

As good an example of the genre as there is (he says diplomatically), and a Number 1 single in Australia that even reached Number 4 in the UK in 1976.

Come to think of it, there are worse Aussie 70's MOR tunes.

didn't the bunbury cricket club have some cartoons (with players like Bunburey instead of Emburey, Buntham etc.) also have charity single that charted?

Should I just google it myself?

The Kinks had a song called "Cricket" from their 1973 album Preservation Act 1.

That may interest a reader or 2, as I know the Kinks have a few fans amongst us.

sample lyrics

Now the Devil has a player and he's called the Demon Bowler,
He's shrewd, he's rude and he's wicked.
He is sent by Sinful Satan and he's out to take your wicket
And you know that that's not cricket.
He'll baffle you with googlies with leg breaks and offspin
But keep a level head and don't let that demon in.
So keep a straight bat at all times, let the Bible be your guide
And you'll get by, yes you'll get by.

Neither referencing cricket nor about it the most "crickety" song for me has to be the TMS theme tune by Booker T and the MGs ...

the title of which I'll have to look up now (Soul Limbo apparently).

It's the musical equivalent of cricket for me, and sounds kind of Carribbean even tho they were American.

More Kinks- Do you Remember Walter sneaks in a 'do you remember Walter playing cricket in the thunder and the rain?

Going way back, there are a load of calypso songs, like Mighty Sparrow's Garfield Sobers and that one about the test match at Lords.

Amazed I can't think of any Jamaican stuff.

****, forgot about that Kinks one.

I was listening to a reggae track a couple of months ago that referred to "length", in the cricket sense I think, but I can't remember for the life of me what it was called.

You'd've thought Clement Dodd would've slipped in the odd reference- a good player in his youth, and (nick)named after a Yorkshire cricketer 'n all.

Let's not forget that fun-loving Brummie Judge Dread, and his "Big Six":

"Boy Blue stood on de burning deck,
Playing a game of cricket,
The ball roll up his trouser leg,
And stumped his-a middle wicket."

Or what about Rory Bremner's mid-80's novelty classic "N-N-N-N-Nineteen not out"?

nn19 not out - Bloody hell that takes me back

i thought that was so funny ....

of course we're not the first to address this theme as i discovered when trying to find the lyrics of the legendary Rory's "spoof". I cam across: cricinfo.com and another one here with the great post:

>carrot rope' by pavement has the line of "the wicket keeper is down".

Tooheys ad campaign late 80's I think. Remember batting bunny Mike Whitney facing up to 'Big' Joel Garner. How'd it go again guys? How do you feel? When you face 'Big' Joel for the final ball and your blood chills.

starts singing "I feel like a Toohey's, I feel like a Toohey's, I feel like a Toohey's or two"

Great lyrics (irony!)- but I could murder a schooner of Toohey's Old - right now!

There was also the "C'mon Aussie C'mon" by the Mojo Singers which was a returning ad campaign that ran for 4 years or so - initially to publicise Kerry Packer's brand new World Series Cricket "circus (as it was often called). The original song was a huge hit in the Australian charts as well.

Lyrics of the first and best version were.

You've been training all the winter
And there's not a team that's fitter
And that's the way it got to be
'Cause you're up against the best you know
This is Supertest you know
And you've go to beat the best the world has seen

Lillee's pounding down like a machine
Pascoe's making divots in the green
Marshy's taking wickets
Hooksey's clearing pickets
And the Chappells' eyes have got that killer gleam
Mr Walker's playing havoc with the bats
Redpath, it's good to see you back
Lairdie's making runs
Dougie's chewing gum
and Gilmour's wielding willow like an axe

C'mon Aussie c'mon c'mon
C'mon Aussie c'mon c'mon
C'mon Aussie c'mon c'mon
C'mon Aussie c'mon

Then there was the tribute to ABC radio and later television comentator and National icon Alan McGilvray but I have no clue who the singer was. I remember the tune and hearing a lot in about 1979 on the TV and radio. The only lyrics I can remember are

"From a lusty cover drive
to one that brings the crowd alive.
From a gentle push behind square leg
to a ball that takes the middle peg.
He's been there, he's done that
He's there from go to woe.
You know the game is not the same without McGilvray."

Anyone Aussies out there remember that one?

How about "songs about/that make reference to cricket or sung by cricketers"?

Here is a rare picture of The Filth starring our own LjCC members Roger Metcalfe on teachest bass and Dan Ryan (for once not being sledged on this forum) on accoustic guitar. Actually this was the famous "Filth no more" incarnation of the group in their first comeback gig after imploding.

I was looking for a reference to Pavement. Apparently they took to watching cricket to alleviate tour boredom. I remember a gig review that Malkmus kept chanting "Keep it on the off side" during one song.

An unlikely one just appeared on my headphones.

The Pet Shop Boys "Can you forgive her?" single from the "Very" album contains the lines...

Remember when you were more easily led

Behind the cricket pavilion and the bicycle shed

Not technically about or making reference to cricket, but how about a former test cricketer embarking on a genuine and serious musical career?

You may remember Henry Olonga  - he went into exile after those friendly Zimbabwean police force people put out a warrant for his arrest for treason (punishable by death). He's now based in England.
Well, you may not know that he has an operatic voice, and has just released his first album, "Aurelia".
If I can find some free samples of his music somewhere, I will post a link here.

The venerable Jack White is holding a cricket bat on the cover of the White Stripes' album Elephant. And makes mention of a third man to boot...

"I shall be released" by Bob Dylan on the original Basement Tapes is actually the lament of a young medium paced trundler ("they say everyone can be replaced/ .... A seamer's life with Kevin Shine comes down/ to whether Duncan Fletcher can be pleased /any day now, any day now/ I shall be released) who knows his ill-fated B tour to India means he'll shortly be released by his county side.

This the Bob Dylan who wrote a song about how great it was to visit Mozambique in 1976 - right about the time it was one of the least desirable places in the world to visit? Not sure he always knows what he's talking about. A bit like this post really

No this the Robert ER Dylan who played for Devon CC and was a fixture on the after-dinner speaker circuit in the Bristol-Yatton crescent a few years back.

Golcar - you do know that former England captain and pace bowler Bob Willis changed his middle name by deed poll to Robert George Dylan Willis? - Seems he was a bit of a fan.

Did you know that Harrison and Dylan formed the Travelling Willburies as a tribute to Bob Willis and John Emburey1

They certainly did. "Handle With Care" was an allegory about the dangers of ball-tampering, sung notionally from the point of view of the ball.
"Been beat up and battered around..."

I didn't know this video existed, but there is a big "make reference to cricket" in it.

Great tune, not too sure about the video though.
