Australia's greatest one day side ever?

In a poll held in Australia, this team was voted

Australia's greatest ODI team:

A Gilchrist
256 matches, 8,561 runs, 376 catches, 37 stumpings

M Waugh
244 matches, 8,500 runs, 85 wickets

R Ponting
268 matches, 9,741 runs, 3 wickets

D Jones
164 matches, 6,068 runs, 3 wickets

S Waugh (capt)
325 matches, 7,569 runs, 195 wickets

M Bevan
232 matches, 6,912 runs, 36 wickets

A Symonds
161 matches, 4,037 runs, 121 wickets

S Warne
194 matches, 1,018 runs, 293 wickets

B Lee
150 matches, 739 runs, 267 wickets

D Lillee
63 matches, 240 runs, 103 wickets

G McGrath
239 matches, 115 runs, 354 wickets

12th man: G Chappell
74 matches, 2,331 runs, 72 wickets

Agree? Disagree? Alan Border may feel a bit unlucky and personally I think they only picked Lillee becuase he was Lillee - mind you can't think of an obvious replacement - McDermott, Lawson - nope. I'd love to choose Gillespie, but I'd get lynched.

I'm surprised that Symonds is in there and also shocked at how many he's played. He's got skill and ability but I'd be surprised if he's the best you can offer.

Pretty good line up tho!

Personally I'd want to see Mick Lewis, Mitchell Johnson, Phil Jacques and Martin Macague in there, as well, but I shan't quibble.

I think with the selection of Symonds, you're being a little (read outragously) hard on a few Aussies.

The following must be simmering (read restlessly bustling in exertive force) in their graves, or, if not dead, would so (erm?)...

1. Don Bradman
2. Keith Miller
3. Ray Lindwall
4. Richie Benaud
5. Bill O'Reilly
6. A. Border
7. D. Boon

and probably many, many more I cannot think of...

This is like one of those ridiculous 'greatest films of all time' lists you get every year. Almost all the selections are from the last 5-10 years. People have very short memories.

Fair enough, but one-day cricket is a modern game. Who's to say Bradman would have been any good at it. After all, Michael Vaughan is (was) a class act when it comes to test cricket but he averages 27 in ODIs.

And Glenn McGrath is also a class act when it comes to test cricket but he averages 3.83 in ODIs - a nice story about his Ljubljanesque ineptitude with the willow in One dayers here

I think you had to have actually played one-day cricket to qualify...

Not necessarily. It didn't specify what period. Regardless, Symonds wouldn't be in my squad.

Hang on.

Having played One Day International cricket for Slovenia, does this then mean I am a better ODI cricketer than Don Bradman?

Wow!

Clearly and without any argument.

You might even make the

"Slovenia's greatest one day side ever."
