The next England coach
Permalink

Right, well when things are going so badly, all one can do is look to the future. Who is the man (and I think in all probability it will be a man) who can lead England to future glory?
Assuming he will be taking over after England's early exit from the World Cup (!), he'll essentially have to achieve two things: a) give England a fighting chance of regaining the Ashes next time round, and b) get England playing decent one-day cricket again.

The established contenders, in no particular order, are:
Tom Moody
Bob Woolmer
Peter Moores
Duncan Fletcher (yes really)
Rod Marsh
Shane Warne
Greg Chappell

There are a few wags mentioning Boycott and Botham, but I think we can probably discount them.

My choice, for what it's worth, would be Moody. I don't see any problem with an Aussie coach. After all, it's no less patriotic than a Zimbabwean, and Troy Cooley was by all accounts hugely influential in England's improvement up to 2005.
I also think that someone who has played test cricket for Australia might be able to help steel up the team mentally, and put a stop to this horrid tendency for capitulation when things go wrong. He also has plenty of experience with English cricket, playing for and captaining Worcestershire for many years. And of course, he was a great, consistent, aggressive batsman and useful bowler in his own right.

Anyway, any thoughts? If someone wants to do a survey/poll type thing, please feel free (I'm not techie enough).

I'm pretty sure England will want to secure either Moody or Woolmer.

It's interesting that the best coaches tend to have been "average" players. On this theory alone I would exclude the likes of Marsh, Chappell and Warne.

One you have ignored is Dav Whatmore - he has a pretty good record of miracle working with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. I hope Australia considers him for their next coach.

Presumably the old-fashioned meaning of wags is intended here. A word dear to my heart.

Of course, what Mrs Flintoff and KP's bird think about it may be of greater importance to the players.

Having slight problems with the "quot" button at the moment

I did think of that point when writing the word actually, but then I thought that the educated readers of this forum would know the original usage.
Anyone who read Smash Hits in the 80s would be familiar with it anyway. The wags!

He's the director of the English Cricket Academy.
I don't know too much about him either, but he has a proven playing and coaching record with Sussex and has apparently expressed a keen interest in the job...

Australia have just named their next coach.

Tim Nielsen, who played about 100 games for South Australia is their new man. He has been involved with the Australian setup for a while now, so is probably the right choice.

Tom Moody withdrew as a candidate leading speculation to his interest in the England job. I would expect him to be England coach after the world cup.

Inclined to agree, but according to this Sri Lanka seem keen to retain him.
Still think there's an outside chance it could be a relative unknown, as Fletcher was.

Duncan Fletcher has just resigned as England Coach.
Peter Moores will be his interim replacement, which may make him favourite for the job permanently as well.

he can't be too upset by this either. Now all he needs is for Glen Roeder to get his coat at St Jame's park and someone good come in (like "Big" Sammy Allardyce - as he's probably hardly ever called) to replace him. ...what's that? Oh...

I had an amusing idea last night that Sven-Goran Eriksson should replace Roeder. He's in the hunt for a manager's job, you know...

Ho-hum gentlemen.

Yes, yes, all very amusing.

But at least when the fat one appoints the fat one, I will have a couple of extra hours in my week. I've taken a Graham Taylor vow with this, along with several other people I know: Sam = no following of NUFC. You're all invited to suggest another club for me to follow with mild indifference, giving your reasoning of course...

Commiserations in order.

Managed by a mate of Steve Fish (andy ritchie), easy access from Barcelona, with big matches against Leeds and Forest next year, I suggest Huddersfield T as your temporary home. Oops Sam Alladyce used to play for 'em...

There's always rugby league mate.

What will you do when Big Sam inevitably takes you to Wembley for a cup final? Will you support them then?

As I know you have spent time in South(ish) London, may I suggest you join Joel in singing this song
"Oh South London
(Oh South London)
Is wonderful
(Is wonderful)
Oh South London is wonderful
It's full of tits, fanny and PALACE
Oh South London is wonderful"

You could probably do worse.

Or if you're going to abandon the Geordies, to annoy them you would have to switch allegiances to the Mackems - that would no doubt "show the bastards"

There's a chance they might finish higher on the table also.

I've got an idea. Why not start supporting Newcastle Town instead?
Admittedly it's a different Newcastle, the under-Lyme version, but they're currently a respectable 12th in the North West Counties League (Division One), and have recently reached the semis of the FA Vase, so there'll be some knock-out tournament experience there for you to savour.
They also play in the same league as the newly-formed "FC United of Manchester", so the tie between the two of them will sort of look a bit like a Premiership one.
More to the point though, it's the same word, you won't have to think twice every time someone asks you who you support. Less effort all round.

You know it miek sense.

This is all getting a bit disturbing really. Chukka, you're a Newcastle fan. You can't abandon them - it's the club you support, not the players (individually) or the manager or the chairman, or the salad-dodging geordies that make up most of the team's following.

We shouldn't be encouraging him to throw in the towel. Your football club is for life; it's who you are. Dan Ryan - he supports Newcastle. That's the way it'll always be.

What Chukka needs now is for his friends to rally round and help him through what will inevitably be a protracted period of miserable trophyless football.

Yes. Like we all did when Fish changed from Chelsea to Man City because he didn't like Ranieri.

I don't quite get what he has against Mr Allardyce though. I thought he is quite a decent bloke and fairly talented manager. God, just imagine who else it could be instead? Steve "Don't call me Malcolm" McClaren would keep them rooted to 15th place, Hoddle or Venables would get them relegated. And Sven, how many think he'd drag them to European glory?

I was taking the p1ss when I mentioned Sven but hilariously he now appears to be in the frame. Was fun to watch a succession of Newcastle fans why-ayeing on TV last night about how they do not want said Swede going anywhere near their beloved club. "Wouldn't fit in round ere layk" and other such remarks.
I'd laugh if he got it, I really would.

It doesn't fuggin matter. As long as the Maggot is in place, we can't do anything. I'd just prefer it if it wasn't an out-and-out crook like Bigwallet Sam.

Yes. Like we all did when Fish changed from Chelsea to Man City because he didn't like Ranieri.

It wasn;t the fact that I just didn't like Ranieri....He fielded a non English side for the first time ever. That's not acceptable in my books...I want to support a team with English base of players, and one especially who uses the academy players throughout the season, so even though Citeh have been trophyless for a ....few years now, at least I have family ties the Blue part of Mancland, plus I used to go to Maine Rd with schoolmates....and I played for the Jr. side ...

That's my rant about defending Paichukka's decision to change allegiance. Good on yer !! it's a protest which should be supported Lux, or I'll kill you !

Just to clarify gents, I'm not switching allegiance. Never.

I'm merely looking for a side to provide me with some half-hearted amusement while I ignore the cesspool at St James' for however long the Maggot and his sidekicks remain in power.

Barcelona are fan-owned btw. But maybe a bit flash...

Big Sam's bum is officially on the Toon seat.
Is this BBC quote really intended without irony? "Allardyce cited his desire to win silverware as the reason for his departure from Bolton."
