England's One Day Bowling Attack
Permalink

As you may be aware I support Australia in the cricket, but as here in Slovenia the team I see the most coverage of and discussion (mainly on Sky News) are England so I have a soft spot for them.

However I am utterly baffled and annoyed by their "poor" (diplomatic word here) performances in the One Day form of the game and livid with the selectors obvious cluelessness when picking the team.

Why do they deem Matthew Hoggard unfit for inclusion in the One Day set-up when they are prepared to let the likes of Anderson, Lewis and Mahmood get thrashed around the park on a regular basis? Hoggard is a consistent and difficult bowler to get away who picks up many early wickets with his great line, length and tricky swing and cut.

Chris Broad is another who is supposed to be a tricky opponent, tall & left-arm - an ideal combination - allegedly pretty handy with the bat late on too.

On paper the One Day side that went out today looks the goods until you reach the bowlers. Lewis is clearly not as tricky outside England and Anderson, well he's had more than a fair chance to impress. Flintoff never gives less than 100% but his bowling is starting to look like that of a man who is getting bloody annoyed at having to carry the whole team on his shoulders. Chris Tremlett and Liam Plunkett are rumoured to be in the squad, but seem to be there only to get a nice suntan. Monty bowled well again getting another big wicket and Dalrymple's figures were impressive, but that isn't enough.

Clearly it is time for the likes of Flrtcher and Graveney to tell their stories walking...

England fans or even other observers biased or not, What would you do if you were selecting the team?

Your use of bowling with "attack" is highly amusing. Can't you just use "Bowlers"? Surely the "England Bowling non panoply" would be better?

Broad is still injured and Plunkett would have played today but got hurt in the nets, so Jimmy "Bentos" Anderson got another go. Hoggard may bowl a nagging line and length in Test matches but gets the full treatment in one-dayers, and apparently isn't too keen. Simon Jones would make a difference though.

After a good long run of relative success in the test side there was a feeling that the one-day game was being neglected to the "benefit" of the test side somehow. As well as being a hostage to fortune it really seems unnecessary when you look at the approach of the other one day sides around the world.

We didn't actually used to be that bad at the 1-days - getting to 2 finals and always making the semis... but over the last 6 or 7 years we've really been left behind. Australia and others have had a very different side for the one-dayers but they have been consistent.

11 wides ... that's just appallling - the wheels are coming off.

Still i predict that Greg will be on England to win the World Cup nevertheless.

Eh bien, je ne l'aurais pas en aucun autre mode...

if England match Kenya's semi-final placing they'll be doing very well. At least there are no games planned in a Caribbean equivalent of Zimbabwe (which would be ...er somewhere on Hispanola?)

or Guantanamo Bay... There are lots of Pakistanis currently resident there, I understand; maybe they should put a team together? Not sure Herschelle Gibbs would be too pleased though.

England to beat Scotland in the World Cup semi-final.
