What is happening with the Austrian League then?
Permalink Closed

I have started this thread so we can keep everyone informed of the latest updates on the status of the Austrian Open League for 2008.

1) What happened? : Due to a number of reasons, both personal and professional Mike Bailey who has run the Open League for the past few years resigned recently with immediate effect.

2) So who's running it now? : A group of representatives of the 13 clubs including the likes of Siva and Wolfgang are doing their best to get everything sorted out as soon as possible. Sadly Siva's mother is suffering from poor health at the moment and they have had to postpone their AGM until Friday 16th of May. As Siva is a very good friend of Ljubljana CC we have written to him to wish her a speedy recovery.

3) What needed / still needs to be done? :

Outstanding payments collected, Umpires nominated, Fixtures, officers nominated, The Austrian League Website organised - quite a lot.

4) Where does Ljubljana CC stand in all of this? : Thanks to Tom all of our club debts have been settled. This will mean that we will have to start collecting player subscribtions / match fees in the very near future to cover some of this. A mail about this subject will appear soon explaining all.

5) So are we playing this year then? : Ljubljana is one of 13 teams who have nominated for the league and we fully expect to be taking part in the league. As far as we understand it only one team (Pakistan United CC) will not be involved this year. 2 other teams still owe debts to the Austrian League (VLCC and PFCC) but both look as if they will be participating.

6) So when will we know anything? : Basically we expect to see fixtures late next week, but until then the fixtures list here is both up-to-date and accurate

7) But wait I have some more questions? : Well here's the place to ask them

Thanks. We might take you up on that offer. However, all of the above information is about the Austrian League , of which we are a guest member. We don't vote or make any decisions. We apply to play each year and are accepted as a "guest" team. They seem to tolerate us as we never threaten to be in the finals. It is a big pity though that all this stuff has hit the Austrian League right now as we had wanted to ask teams to come and play in Ljubljana, (now we are part of the Schengen agreement) but I wouldn't have too much optimism for that occuring this year, now that all the organisation has fallen apart so late in the season (we would normally have played a match or 2 by now)

more to come when I learn more (working on something important with an extremely tight deadline at the moment and need to get it finished today, so will find out the full story at my leisure tomorrow)

Weh hey, we're in the Austrian southern league. We could win that ... or maybe come fourth.
I'll be there for at least 3 of the games in July - maybe all 4. Ryan - are you going to resurrect your Ljubljana career?

Know what you mean. Apart from the international tournaments, that weekend in Vienna has been the best cricket we get. Have we been kicked out of the Open League for being too krap or what? Budapest would be a laugh but the cricket would be rubbish.

What happened to the idea of playing the Luxembourg national team up here?

We haven't heard back from them. Maybe we should try and ask them again. I wouldn't underestimate the Hungarian team also. With their full squad to choose from and the exponential growth they have, we could have our hands full.

Clearly there is a Southern League as it puts all its "difficult" eggs in one "too hard" basket. Us, Graz, Velden and last year's runners-up Salzburg - to be honest  Velden and us look like the easiest points there, but we have the advantage of 3 home games so we might do OK.

We can take Graz. And Salzburg at full strength.

I would love to make up that full strength in July, but I think August is more likely for me. Nevertheless, I shall do me best...

No, July it is. Count me in. Just have to get fully fit now. And remember how to bat. And bowl. I reckon I might even hit the Raval for a bit of Pakistani street cricket. Don't think I'll throw any fruit at anybody though...

OK so it's like this.

The Austrian League is now in 2 divisions. 9 teams in Vienna - Austria CC, Lords CC, United Nations CC, Pakistan CC, Pak Falken CC, Five Continents CC, Sri Lanka CC, Vienna CC and Vienna Lions CC. The top 6 from that group go into a knowckout quarter finals with the top two from the Southern (ie Non-Vienna) league. Ljubljana CC, Graz CC, CC Velden 91 and Salzburg CC

We play each team twice - once home (Valburga) and once away (Velden) - we also have to umpire 3 neutral games. We have already umpired one of these. Tom and I did it. You both get paid for it and we will probably be looking for volunteers for the other 2 occasions.

The League is now (wisely) 40 over matches.

From our side of the draw - Velden have some strong hitters all through their line up and a couple of useful swing bowlers. Mark Thomas (an Aussie) was bowling fairly quickly on Velden's re-laid and consequently faster & bouncier pitch. We shouldn't expect an easy match against them as they always lift against us. Still they struggle for depth and stamina.

Graz is now 2 clubs merged into one. We have never played them, but they are heavily Indian based. Apparently their best 2 players are gone?

Salzburg have 2 excellent bowlers who get ludicrous swing and cut from the new ball. However they do spray it around a bit and our left handers will annoy them as they feed the dairy with every 3rd ball. They are fairly slow in the field but there are one or 2 simply amazing arms. They have 2 front foot batsmen who drive straight and hard. Leave them to me :) Oh and one of their bowlers seems to "chuck" it. In short though Velden probably scored 50 extra runs against these guys by taking lots of singles that their fielders should have stopped. Salzburg's keeper though is a quality player.

I think we need to win 4 games to guarantee us a "Vienna trip" and believe we can  if we play to our ability. We beat Salzburg last year fairly comforatbly and we have the bowling to catch their best batsmen early.

For any more League related questions. Post them here and I'll do my best to answer them.

When are the other Velden matches we're supposed to umpire? I'll put my hand up for a bit of that.

That's what it says. I have written to the ACA. I can assure you that this is not our fault in the slightest and we should have our 6 points very soon.

Not impressed mind youfurious

OK the story is this. For whatever reason, Graz didn't know the game had been cancelled. Therefore when they turned up to play they were obviously less than impressed by our non-appearance. They claimed all 14 points. Vienna and the ACA have been informed and realised that a genuine "****-up" has been made and are currently deciding (as there is no precident for this occurance) whether the game should be A) rescheduled to another date or B) called a draw and the points split. I have offered the only date that is OK for us 26th July and we await. I will of course keep everybody informed.

This story gets better and better...

We were sent a cancellation e-mail on Friday from Stefan Schauss of Velden CC. It was cc'd to restaurant@marsala.at where it obviously wasn't read by anyone.

The icing on the cake was that in addition to Graz drivng all the way to Velden, Velden sent 2 umpires, so it seems someone at Velden really dropped the ball on this one. Graz CC are rightly fuming and have demanded that both teams are awarded 14 points.

I have a feeling the game will be replayed - though Graz have said (correctly in my opinion) that they will not be paying any ground fees for that game as they had to drive all the way from Graz.

I'll keep everyone informed.

Graz would do better to accept the draw. We were gonna go up and beat them. I think the best would be to replay the game at a different time. Only fair. and this all goes to show that people dont read emails.

You have to be kidding - the only communication with Graz was an email to a restaurant the night before? No one has a mobile phone? That is worse than useless.

Shocked at the brassneck of Graz claiming 14 points for "driving all the way to Velden". How many retrospective points could Ljubljana claim for trips to Vienna? As if the fact you turned up after not checking your email entitles you to points.

I dont know if you have umpires yet for the 16th of August but Jasa and I were talking about doing it.

If you want us to do it then we can. We are both back of our respective holidays. As Jasa leaves on tuesday for 2 weeks and i leave on the 25th until the 9th of August. Hope this helps in some way. I know how busy Brad, Tom and Mark are.
