World Cup XI (so far)

The inevitable name-your-XI-so-far thread. We can probably do a nightmare XI too, which ends up more popular, human nature being what it is...

Mine:

Hayden
Jayasuriya
Ponting (c)
Styris
Gibbs
Boucher
Vaas
Flintoff
Bond
Muralitharan
Tait

Subtlety at the top, Ponting has actually captained well for once, The Rus picks himself (and has bagged a fair few wickets too), Gibbs edges out KP and Silva for hitting the six sixes, which is pretty tricky to do, it pains me to say that the racist has batted rather brilliantly, WPUJC has done the biz again and opens the bowling with ex-plod Bond, Freddie has batted like Chaminder but is still a damn fine bowler, Tait has been the most effective Aussie weapon, and Murali is the greatest. Hogg and Collingowood might make the squad too.

Nightmare:

This one requires a lot more thought. Back later

Pietersen
Sangakarra (keeper)

I'd almost pick the same as you but I'd have Collingwood or Pietersen - KP gets the nod (just) in for Flintoff. Flintoff has only knocked over a few tailenders really. Sangakarra just tips out Gilchrist for the stumping of Brian Lara off Vaas.

I'd love to pick Bracken over Vaas as Bracken has been Scrooge-like but Vaas has grabbed the wickets. I'd have McMillan and Oram on standby also for good performances. Malinga and Hogg can be considered slightly unlucky in my XI also. What price would you have got to pick Styris, Tait and Hayden 2 months ago?

Interestingly, Glen McGrath is a runaway leader in the official best player at the moment by a decent margin, yet neither of us have picked him.

My "nightmare XI"

Michael Vaughan
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
Inzumam Ul-Haq
Michael Hussey
MS Dhoni
Shane Watson
Andew Hall
Makhaya Ntini
Harbijan Singh
James "Bentos" Anderson

Could be a reasonable XI on their day too.

Amusingly, I think every one of these players has been ranked #1 in the world at some point.
It's not really been a tournament for the veterans, has it?
Exceptions: Vaas, McGrath, maybe Kallis...

New nightmare XI:

Bell
Vaughan
Strauss
Pietersen
Collingwood
Flintoff
Joyce
Nixon
Mahmood
Panesar
Anderson

I've taken the liberty of subbing in Ed Joyce as Ravi Bopara does not deserve to be tarred with the same brush as these other clowns. Unless he chucks an over of pies in the next 20 minutes of course...

Can we take it then that you are no longer the number 1 ticket holder of the Sajid Mahmood fan club? You seemed to be a bit of a fan not long ago.

Not in one-days mate, he's a basket case. He barely plays them for Lancashire. But he's still potentially a Test-winning bowler.

England's XI for the next World Cup:

Benning
Davies/Prior
Pietersen
Collingwood
Gidman
Strauss/Clarke
Rashid
Flintoff
Broad
Jones the Seam (wishful thinking probably)
Geoff Boycott's Granny (she's red hot)

Ricki Clarke?

Incidentally - how many of these guys are from Surrey?

glad to see Rasid in there after smacking 80 odd against Surrey in his 8th first class fixture... before grabbing 4 wkts.

i'd like to see him enjoy at least a season in the county championship before having to step up tho...
