National holidays, dontcha just love em? Deadly.

Where's the dancing in the streets, the foodstalls, the impromptu cricket match in the park, the out-of-tune ex-Miss Slovenia hacking her way through 'I Will Survive'?

Instead, listen to some half-dead **** rattling through a few poems in a cultural centre last dusted for Tito's funeral. All the cvicek you can drink, mind.

I may be no ex-Miss Slovenia but I'll sing "I will survive" any time you like mate - no bribes required. It is a bloody great song.

Cvicek though, no way, my windows are already clean.

Don't you love the way they celebrate the day their national hero died, not his birthday!

Can't say I've read anything by the great "figgy" as he is apparently know but I can post one of my favourite Slovene poems.

Odkar vem zanjo,
imajo dnevi modre oči
in vode barvo njenega krila.
Odkar vem zanjo,
veter šumi njen glas
in rože njene besede govore.

Tako rad imam te poletne oblake:
njene korake so spremljali,
ko je čez trave večerne prišla.

Tako imam rad te vrbe ob vodi,
zamišljene v tiho,
nežno pravljico v njej.
Nihče ne ve, kaj šepetajo.
Samo jaz.
In se smehljam.

the poem was dedicated to his wife.

my post was dedicated to mine.

sadly he died a couple of years ago, so there'll be no settling of scores.

my fave bit is:

Nihče ne ve, kaj šepetajo.
Samo jaz.
In se smehljam.


I liked it the first time I read (in English) but particularly now I'm more famiilar with the general morbid flavour of Slovenian literature it seems remarkably up beat...

I think Joel's probably got it. Shafting and blatting are certainly acceptable forum words.

I'm all for campaigning to have twaddle+cat released from the bonds of censorship. It's a very useful word and not very rude anymore. You can even hear it on CBeebies sometimes.

Yes it's the combination of letters you get by taking the 1st letters of these 4 words. The War Against Terrorism.

Not much I can do about the censorship, though I refuse to believe that anyone on CBBC has ever said ****.

Shalom....yes I am in Tel Aviv. They also have many four letter words here that they want censored. I think Iran and ****ing *** spring to mind.
